Springfield restaurant gives away thousands of free meals

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS/WRSP) — Chadito’s Mexican American Grill, located at 3030 S. Sixth St. in Springfield, is giving out free meals to any local student in need during the pandemic.

Owner Chad Reese and his wife started the “Take a Taco, Give a Taco” program last March and have given away nearly 3,000 free meals.

“At one point, we were doing 60, 70 meals a lunch hour,” Reese said. “It was unbelievable.”

Customers would pay for an extra taco that would then go to a child that might have been missing out on lunches at schools because of remote learning.

“It was even more humbling to show the support from our customers to help us be able to provide the service,” Reese said.

The students and their families weren’t the only ones struggling. Reese had to close one of his other locations because of the financial toll of the pandemic.

“We’re down to one store now,” Reese said. “We’re just doing the best that we possibly can.”

Even with one less store, Reese said the need to help others is still important.

“No questions asked,” Reese said. “If they need a meal, we give them a free meal.”

As long as a kid is in the car, families can pull up to the Chadito’s drive-thru and leave with a free soft taco and nachos.

Free meals for students are available from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. every weekday.
